Angelenos Still Say #DefundThePolice and #ReimaginePublicSafety: People’s Budget LA Coalition Releases FY 2025-2026 Survey Results

Los Angeles, CA — Five years after the murder of George Floyd and the historic uprisings that followed, Angelenos remain committed to divesting from police and investing in community. The People’s Budget LA Coalition, convened by Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles, will publicly release the results of its 2025 People's Budget Survey on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. PST, in person and via livestream.

Launched in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and #BlackLADemands, the People’s Budget has become a powerful community-led tool for demanding city budgets that reflect the priorities of the people — not policing and punishment. That year, the pressure from the streets led then-Mayor Garcetti to announce a $150 million cut to the LAPD budget and commit $100 million in investments to the Black community — promises that remain largely unmet.

This year’s survey, which engaged nearly 1,500 Angelenos, reaffirms a consistent trend: residents continue to rank policing as the lowest budget priority, while calling for the highest investment in core community needs like housing, healthcare, good jobs, mental health services, and reimagined public safety strategies.

The results make one thing clear: Angelenos want a care-first city budget, not one dominated by law enforcement. The People's Budget LA Coalition will present the full survey findings to the public and deliver them to the Mayor’s Office.
